Why Music Is Important

Author: Emily Cutler, 4th Grade 2005

Have you ever thought about how important music is? I believe music can make a significant difference in someone's life, so it is, indeed, important. For example, music brings hope, freedom, delight, and love, so it's soothing. Also, music can help people create, bringing out their talent. Finally, anyone can enjoy it - no one has to be a certain race or speak a certain language, and this can bring people together. I feel that togetherness creates a strong bond of friendship and support, and a strong bond leads to a full life.

To begin with, many people feel free, hopeful, and confident when they listen to or play music. Personally, playing the piano helps me feel better when I have troubles. Once, when I was getting frustrated with homework, piano helped me calm down and take a break. Afterwards, I completed the homework much more calmly and confidently. Also, when I finish learning a challenging composition and perform it, I feel great about myself because I've accomplished a song that has taken lots of hard work. Music improves several other feelings. Since each piece has a different mood, it kind of feels like music is "relating' to me if it has the same mood I'm in. Having something relate to me always soothes me. This is one of the delightful elements of music - it genuinely eases my soul.

In addition, music illustrates creativity and talent, which is essential because people need a way to express themselves. I feel that I can play any piece with all my heart, putting emotion and drama into the song, which I call getting creative! Of course, I can also create by composing a melody that expresses my personality and me. What is more complicated and imaginative is interpreting the lyrics of a tune. To see this talent in others, I watch talent shows and realize how much potential people have. Each person who cares about music and can perform it has a talent inside them that's important to be shown. Everyone can teach or learn from that person.

Most importantly, music brings people together. When families or friends listen to music together, it releases their soul and helps them connect with each other. For example, my pen pal and I were in a disagreement, but then we started talking about music. We discovered we both had an interest in classical music and started being friends again. Music also connects me to the world. I once heard the words of a song about world peace and was able to relate to the singer and everyone else who wanted world peace. Clearly, music is a language that anyone can understand. So if another girl from France and I were together, we might not be able to understand each other's languages, but we'd be able to understand the music, our differences not mattering to our friendship. But what really brings me together with others is playing for them. Some give me helpful tips, and others just listen and are happy just to hear a beautiful song, which delights me and leads to companionship. Everyone needs people who will truly care for them, and, as you can see, music is a great way to gain these friends.

To conclude, music is extremely important to the world and everyone who lives in it. Music can help me feel free, hopeful, or confident, it's a great way of showing artistry, and it brings togetherness. I hope to one day help create this togetherness by composing a piece that the nation will like and the world can be united with. After all, music is more powerful than some people think; what would we do without music?
